Since a STEAM version was also made available, I decided to download it and give it a spin.

During the previous beta test, the performance was a total disaster—monsters would turn into low-poly triangles, and it looked like it could barely run at all. It was so bad that I honestly started questioning if Capcom's technical capabilities had degraded with the new generation of developers. Fortunately, this newly released Free Play build is a completely different story, showing massive improvements across the board.

Back when I ran the earlier benchmark tests, I was checking performance on the "Medium" preset. This time, however, I didn't even bother checking my old configuration and just jumped straight in. Upon launching, the game defaulted to "Lowest" settings and automatically forced me into the opening story sequence before giving me a chance to tweak the graphics menu. The screen looked incredibly grainy and blurry, so I immediately opened the settings and bumped it up to "Low." For a while, I was playing via Steam Link on my phone; because the streaming compression naturally masked the rough edges with a sort of dithering effect, I didn't notice the lower quality at all at first.

After that initial session, I sat down at my PC monitor to test out different configurations. As a final test, I turned the graphics preset all the way up to "High." Even though a system warning popped up claiming my VRAM was pushed to its absolute limit, the game ran flawlessly without a single stutter. It handled demanding scenes with ease, remaining completely stable even when two large monsters occupied the screen simultaneously. Getting the game to run smoothly on "High" settings on an aging GTX 1660 Ti is an incredible feat—Capcom has done an outstanding job with optimization this time around.

For context, here are the specs of the test system used for this evaluation:

System: Fujitsu ESPRIMO D588

CPU: Intel Core i3-8700

GPU: GTX 1660 Ti

RAM: 16GB

SSD: Western Digital 512GB M.2 NVMe (PCIe 3.0) *Upgraded from a 256GB SATA drive that ran out of space due to Street Fighter 6

Why the "Low" Preset Looked Surprisingly Clean via Steam Link on Mobile

Here is a screenshot captured from the phone screen while running via Steam Link on the "Low" graphic preset. While Alma's textures appear a bit blurry, they didn't really bother me during gameplay. The low-polygon rendering on the hair models is the most noticeable drawback, but overall, the visual output looks remarkably sharp on a mobile display via Steam Link.

When playing remotely on a smartphone screen, the visual compromises are surprisingly easy to overlook. The smaller display size combined with the natural video compression introduced during streaming acts as an elegant filter, effectively smoothing out and hiding the rougher graphical elements.

Another Steam Link screenshot. Even my character's hair looks smooth and clean here—a massive contrast to how incredibly grainy and pixelated this exact same "Low" setting looks when viewed directly on a large PC monitor.

The differences become blatantly obvious once things are in motion; under the "Low" preset, Alma's glasses look completely jagged and broken around the frames.

For comparison, this is how the game looks running on the "High" graphic preset.

And here is the corresponding scene captured on the "Low" setting.

Back on "High" settings again. Pay attention to the dramatic increase in detail on the protagonist's thick outfit. Additionally, the netting material visible further up in the background shows an immediate, stark difference in rendering fidelity.

Is the VRAM Warning Just a False Alarm You Can Safely Ignore?

When bumping the configurations up to "High," the internal system engine throws a pop-up alert warning that video memory is pushed to the absolute edge. However, monitoring actual hardware metrics reveals that real GPU load peaks around 96%, meaning there is still a safe performance cushion left in both raw rendering power and allocation overhead. The game simply pre-allocates and reserves massive chunks of VRAM out of caution, triggering a conservative alert. You can safely dismiss the pop-up and keep playing; so far, it hasn't caused a single stability issue. Even during intensive gameplay sequences with multiple heavy assets loaded, frame delivery remained completely smooth without dropping frames.

The Secret Behind the Smooth Performance: Switch 2 Development Cycle

How is an aging mid-range card like the GTX 1660 Ti managing to pull off consistent, stable performance on a global "High" configuration for a next-gen title? The answer likely stems from optimization pipelines designed around the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Because the game is being architected as a cross-platform release with Nintendo's next-gen hardware in mind, aggressive asset streaming efficiency and low-level code modernizations were built directly into the engine's foundation from day one.

Furthermore, even if the GTX 1660 Ti belongs to an older generation of mid-range hardware, it's still a dedicated desktop graphics processor. There's no reason it should deliver a worse visual presentation than what the portable Switch 2 architecture will target. Following the technical hiccups observed during the previous beta test, it looks like senior engineers stepped in to enforce rigorous optimization protocols, resulting in an exceptionally polished final build.

Conclusion: Planning an Epic Co-Op Hunt on Switch 2 with My Son

Testing this build confirms that a modest GTX 1660 Ti setup can deliver a visually stunning, smooth gaming experience on the global "High" configuration without having to sacrifice graphical fidelity. There is absolutely no reason to compromise on asset resolution based on generic internet assumptions. Given that the GPU core still shows some thermal and processing overhead, I plan on pushing individual detail sliders even higher in my next session. Perhaps it's just a sign of getting older, but I honestly struggle to tell the difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS these days. It might actually make more sense to lock the frame rate to 30 FPS and max out the remaining fidelity settings instead.

On a side note, taking a closer look at these Switch 2 promotional renders—they look absolutely phenomenal. The armor set shown here appears to be the classic gear from Monster Hunter: World. I'm highly curious to see what final engine configurations and upscaling techniques they are using to achieve this level of fidelity on portable hardware.

Ahead of the official Switch 2 release, a "Free Play Version" has been launched, allowing players to experience the very beginning of the main game.
