When starting out with kayaking, many people debate whether to get a 2-piece paddle for easy transport or a 1-piece paddle for reliable rigidity. I initially chose a solid 1-piece paddle and carried it on the roof of my Mazda Roadster alongside the kayak. However, loading it every time was a hassle, and the paddle shaft started getting dented. To solve this, I decided to replicate the structure of commercial 2-piece paddles and modify my 1-piece paddle into a detachable split-shaft design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I used an 8mm single-pin leaf spring push button for locking, which is readily available on Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cutting with a Pipe Cutter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

First, cut the paddle shaft using a pipe cutter. Since you cannot determine the exact inner diameter without cutting it open, this is where everything starts. To create a spigot ferrule joint (inserting a core material inside to connect them), I planned for a 20cm inner pipe and offset the cut by 5cm (a quarter of the length) from the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After cutting and measuring, the outer diameter of the shaft was 30mm with a 1mm wall thickness, making the inner diameter 28mm. I prepared 28mm and 27mm aluminum pipes (300mm in length) as the inner core material. Shaving down the entire 28mm pipe to fit would have been too tedious, so I chose to wrap resin around the 27mm pipe to adjust it for a tight, precise fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, drill holes for both the fixed side and the detachable (locking) side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Fixed Side:<\/strong> Drill two holes for rivets. I selected a drill bit size that matched the rivets I had on hand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Locking Side:<\/strong> Since I used an 8mm spring push button, I drilled an 8mm hole. Because the tip of the button is slightly tapered, it is best to expand the outer hole gradually while checking the fit to prevent any play (the hole on the inner pipe side fits perfectly at 8mm).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The hole on the inner pipe side fits perfectly at 8mm. Installing the spring button is as simple as inserting it into the pipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Once assembled, everything aligned properly, confirming that the locking mechanism works flawlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If water gets inside through the joint gaps, the paddle risks sinking if dropped in the ocean. Looking for a waterproofing solution, I browsed through a 100-yen store, Seria, and found silicone chair leg caps that fit absolutely perfectly! I installed the S-size on the inner side and the M-size on the outer side to create a watertight seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Wandering around Seria and discovering something that results in such a perfect \"Cinderella fit\" is incredibly satisfying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Final Gluing with Epoxy Resin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Once all materials are ready, the final step is to glue the inner pipe. Applying my usual rod-building techniques, I first wrapped masking tape around the pipe with slight gaps to create a tight fit inside the outer shaft. Then, I applied plenty of Daiso's 2-part epoxy adhesive and inserted it into the outer paddle shaft to secure it. For the sliding side, I applied a very thin layer of the 2-part epoxy to bridge the tiny gap between the 28mm inner diameter and the 27mm outer diameter, and sanded it smooth with sandpaper after it cured. With that, the 2-piece paddle is complete and can now be easily loaded inside the car!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
